Iberia Plus is now Iberia Club
If you are looking for Iberia Plus, you are in the right place — the programme still exists, but Iberia renamed it Iberia Club and changed how you climb it. The old name still appears all over the internet, so this guide uses the current rules and tells you where they differ from the ones you may have read elsewhere.
The single biggest change: Elite Points are now earned per euro spent, not by distance flown. If you have been planning your flying around mileage runs and fare classes, that logic no longer applies.
Joining Iberia Club and setting up your account
Signing up is free. Go to the Iberia website, open the Iberia Club section and register with your name, date of birth and contact details. You will be given an Iberia Club number — add it to every booking, including flights you take on partner airlines, or the Avios and Elite Points will not find their way to you.
Once you are in, set up the online account properly. It is where you check your Avios balance, track how far you are from the next tier, and manage your details. Keep your contact information current: tier changes, expiry warnings and targeted offers all arrive by email.
The Iberia Club tiers, and what each is actually worth
Every member starts at Clásica. Above it sit Plata, Oro, Platino and Platino Prime, plus two lifetime categories — Infinita and Infinita Prime — for very long-term flyers.
The most useful thing to understand is that your tier changes how fast you earn Avios on every euro you spend:
- Clásica — 5 Avios per euro. Access to Avios redemptions and cabin upgrades.
- Plata — 6 Avios per euro, Business check-in desks, priority boarding and extra baggage capacity.
- Oro — 7 Avios per euro, free VIP lounge access and a dedicated customer service line.
- Platino — 8 Avios per euro, VIP lounges, parking, and 2 free cabin upgrades.
- Platino Prime — 9 Avios per euro, 4 free upgrades a year and top priority boarding.
- Infinita — 9 Avios per euro, 4 free upgrades a year, and your Avios never expire.
- Infinita Prime — 8 free upgrades a year, guaranteed availability on Avios tickets, and 2 Oro memberships to give to whoever you like.
Note that Platino is not the top of the ladder any more — Platino Prime was added above it. Full benefit tables are on the Iberia Club levels page.
How many Elite Points you need
Elite Points are what move you up; Avios are what you spend. They are separate currencies and it is worth keeping them straight.
- Plata — 3,500 Elite Points, or 20 qualifying flights
- Oro — 7,500 Elite Points, or 40 qualifying flights
- Platino — 20,000 Elite Points, or 90 qualifying flights
- Platino Prime — 30,000 Elite Points
- Infinita — 400,000 Elite Points (lifetime)
- Infinita Prime — 640,000 Elite Points (lifetime)
The flight-count route is judged over the tier year, which runs from 1 April to 31 March, and those flights must carry an IB code — operated by Iberia or by a partner within the programme.
You earn 1 Elite Point per euro spent, and that includes extras, not just the fare: a second bag, seat selection or a paid upgrade all count. You can also earn Elite Points shopping with 90+ associated brands, though only 30% of those count towards moving up a tier. Details are on the Elite Points page.
Because progress now tracks spending rather than distance, the cheapest route to a tier is no longer the longest one. If you are chasing status, what matters is where your travel budget goes — which makes it worth knowing whether you are overpaying for the flights you were taking anyway. That is exactly what theflightagent.app watches for you.
Claiming missing Avios
Avios sometimes fail to appear — usually when a booking was made through a third party, or the Iberia Club number was left off the reservation.
To claim, you will need your Iberia Club number, the booking reference, the flight details (date, flight number, origin and destination) and your boarding pass or e-ticket. Start the claim from the 'Manage my account' section of the Iberia site. Do it promptly — claims have deadlines, so do not leave a missing credit sitting for months.
Frequently asked questions
Do my Avios expire? Yes, if the account goes quiet. Avios expire after 36 months with no earning or spending activity. Be careful here: transferring Avios between Iberia Club, The British Airways Club and Vueling Club does not count as activity, so a transfer will not reset the clock. After 48 months of inactivity the account itself is withdrawn from the programme. Infinita members are exempt — their Avios never expire. The current wording is in the general terms and conditions, and there is a dedicated Avios expiry FAQ.
How many Avios do I need for a flight? It depends on route, date and cabin — Iberia prices award seats dynamically rather than from a fixed chart. Check the exact figure for your dates when you search.
Can I earn on partner airlines? Yes. Iberia is a oneworld member, and flights with partner airlines earn both Avios and Elite Points. Rates vary by airline and fare, so check the partner earning table before you assume.
Can I upgrade a flight with Avios? Yes, subject to availability, either at booking or afterwards through 'Manage my booking'. Platino and above also receive a number of free upgrades outright each year.
Is Iberia Plus the same as Avios? Not quite. Avios is the currency, shared across Iberia Club, The British Airways Club and Vueling Club. Iberia Club is the programme that earns and spends it.
